Tax season doesn’t have to be stressful—or expensive. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties offers free tax preparation for individuals and families who qualify, ensuring more people keep the refunds they’ve earned.

What Is VITA?

VITA is an IRS-sponsored program that provides free, reliable tax help from IRS-certified volunteers. These trained tax preparers help individuals file their tax returns accurately and on time—often helping them claim valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).

Who Qualifies for Free Tax Preparation?

You may qualify for VITA assistance if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • Earned roughly $67,000 or below
  • Are a person with a disability
  • Are a senior or retiree with a modest income
  • Are a student or first-time filer with simple returns
Our goal is to support those who need it most—so if you're unsure whether you qualify, reach out!

What You’ll Need to Bring:

  • A valid photo ID (for you and your spouse if filing jointly)
  • Social Security cards (or ITIN letters) for everyone on the return
  • All W-2, 1099, or other income statements
  • Health Insurance Forms (1095-A, B, or C if applicable)
  • Proof of expenses (childcare, tuition, etc.) if claiming deductions or credits
  • Direct deposit information (bank routing and account numbers)
  • A copy of last year’s tax return (if available)
