The process for certifying our partner agencies and approval for funding includes:
- Our United Way identifies key focus areas relevant to the needs of our community.
- Priorities are shaped by community needs assessments, ALICE reports, and stakeholder input.
- A formal grant application period opens January 2027.
- Nonprofits are invited to submit proposals aligned with the United Way’s focus areas.
- Applications require:

- Program description and goals
- Target population and geographic service area
- Budget and use of funds
- Measurement and evaluation plans
- Audited financials
- Nonprofit applicants hold site visits, where volunteer auditors walk through the operations, listen to presentations, and conduct interviews.
- This allows reviewers to see programs in action, ask questions, and validate application claims.
- The United Way of St Johns and Putnam Counties Community Impact Committee meets to review applications and funding requests.
- They use a scoring rubric that assesses:
- Alignment with United Way priorities
- Demonstrated community need
- Evidence-based programming
- Organizational capacity and financial health
- Potential for measurable outcomes
- Committee make funding recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors.
- The Board reviews and formally approves grant awards.
- Funding decisions are then communicated to applicants.
- Awarded nonprofits receive a grant agreement/contract outlining:
- Approved funding amount and timeline
- Reporting requirements
- Expectations for collaboration and visibility (e.g., using the United Way logo, participating in joint initiatives).
- Nonprofits submit semi-annual reports on outcomes.
- United Way staff track progress and ensure accountability.
