United Way of St. Johns County, initially known as the Community Chest, held its first Annual Meeting on March 14, 1957 at the Bennett Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida. In that inaugural year, the organization raised $48,176.85 for local non-profit organizations – American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Mental Health Agency, Salvation Army and YMCA.
Over the years, member agency names have changed, as have board members and the office location, but one constant remains the same today. Just as it was conceptualized in 1957, St. Johns County residents working together to solve community problems is the most effective and efficient manner to “increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another.”
Thank you St. Johns County for your compassionate and generous hearts and your continued support. It is amazing what can, and does, happen when we LIVE UNITED.
