National Volunteer Week - Nancy Burns

Nancy Burns

Tell us how you first got involved with United Way of St. Johns County.

I first got involved when I took an early retirement from the school district in Pittsburgh, PA where I taught Special Education students and the physically handicapped for 27 years. After vacationing in Florida for 11 years, my husband Jim and I decided to move to St. Augustine Beach in 1992. I was looking for somewhere to volunteer and I had previous United Way involvements in Pittsburgh. I started volunteering 2 days a week and it evolved into a paid position that has lasted for over 20 years. I now am back to volunteering 3 mornings a week!

Tell us about a positive experience you’ve had as an UW-SJC volunteer.

I wish people knew what an extraordinary organization this is and how many different things are done here in St. Johns County.

Tell us about a positive experience you’ve had as an UW-SJC volunteer.

I feel so wonderful about the Monday Report I facilitate weekly. It compiles the various resources that help in our community. It is distributed to over 50 entities weekly and communicates everything from help with light bills to food boxes and hot meal services.

When you aren’t volunteering, what can we find you doing?

I enjoy spending time with my close friends and traveling several times a year with family. I also volunteer with Catholic Charities weekly.

What happy moment will you always remember?

A lifetime of memories with my husband Jimmy to whom I was married for 62 years is a source of joy for me.
